Bryan Rust’s three-point night carried Penguins past Sabres after Buffalo’s brief second-period surge

Some 4-1 games feel settled long before the horn. This one didn’t. The Pittsburgh Penguins spent most of Monday night building and rebuilding their cushion against the Buffalo Sabres, and Bryan Rust was at the center of nearly every important turn at PPG Paints Arena.

Rust set the tone, then kept shaping the game

Pittsburgh’s first breakthrough arrived at 10:27 of the opening period, when Connor Dewar scored on a wrist shot with Rust and Andrei Kuzmenko supplying the assists. It was not an avalanche of offense, just a clean first separation in a game that would keep asking the same question of Buffalo: could the Sabres erase the next Penguin goal before another one followed?

That opener also framed the rest of the night for Rust. He was not merely one name on the scoresheet; he was the connective thread. After helping set up Dewar in the first, he struck himself at 12:16 of the second, finishing a play created by Hendrix Lapierre and Kris Letang for a 2-0 lead. By then, Pittsburgh had done something subtle but important: it had turned a close game into one where Buffalo was always chasing the next answer.

There is value in the way the Penguins spread the scoring without losing a focal point. Dewar, Rust, Avery Hayes and Elmer Soderblom each scored once, but Rust still ended with the night’s clearest imprint, a goal and two assists. That combination matters because it suggests both balance and a driver behind it, not just four isolated moments.

Buffalo finally cut into the lead — and lost the moment almost immediately

For a while, the Sabres kept the game within reach. Their best push on the scoreboard came at 18:32 of the second period, when Jake Richard scored on a wrist shot with Thomas Bordeleau and Zach Metsa assisting. At 2-1, there was finally some pressure on Pittsburgh to manage the rest of the period rather than simply nurse a comfortable edge.

Instead, the game’s sharpest swing came almost instantly. Just 1:26 after Richard gave Buffalo life, Hayes restored the two-goal margin with an unassisted goal at 19:58 of the second. It was a harsh reset for the Sabres, because the work of climbing back had barely had time to settle before it was undone. A one-goal game asks for a composed intermission and a live third period; a 3-1 game puts the team behind back into survival mode.

That sequence is why the final score looks a touch smoother for Pittsburgh than the night really was. Buffalo did make the Penguins keep playing. But the Sabres never got to sit in the tension of a one-goal game for long, and that matters. By the time Soderblom scored at 18:13 of the third, with Rust and Dewar assisting, Pittsburgh had turned a potentially nervous finish into a clean closing line.

Our take: the finishing gap was real, even if the game stayed close for stretches

The numbers available here point to a game that was competitive in volume and decisive in conversion. Buffalo’s 24 saves against four goals allowed mean Pittsburgh put 28 shots on goal. Pittsburgh’s 23 saves against one goal allowed mean Buffalo finished with 24 shots on goal. That is not a runaway in opportunities reaching the net. The Penguins simply made more of theirs, and their team save percentage of .958 outperformed Buffalo’s .889.

From Buffalo’s side, the most obvious area for improvement is not a grand tactical rewrite; it is protecting the emotional ground gained by its own scoring. Richard’s goal at 18:32 of the second should have changed the feel of the game for longer than 86 seconds. When a team gets only one goal on the night, it cannot afford to hand back momentum almost immediately. It is also fair to say the Sabres could use broader offensive involvement next time, because only Richard, Bordeleau and Metsa appeared on their scoring summary.

For Pittsburgh, this was a good result with a useful reminder tucked inside it. The Penguins earned a multi-goal win, but they also saw a 2-0 lead become 2-1 late in the second, and they did not put the game fully away until Soderblom’s goal with 1:47 left in regulation. That is not a flaw to panic over; it is simply the difference between winning comfortably on the scoreboard and controlling every phase of the night.

Still, the Penguins leave with the more convincing story. Rust drove play on the scoresheet, four different players scored, and the goaltending line held Buffalo to a single goal. The Sabres were close enough to make the game interesting, but not clinical enough to change it. In a 4-1 NHL result that stayed tense longer than it reads, Pittsburgh won the moments that matter most.
