Hurricanes bury Predators early as Jackson Blake shines and Brandon Bussi records a 22-save shutout

The Carolina Hurricanes turned a close game on paper into a one-sided result on the ice Saturday, scoring three times in the first period and rolling past the Nashville Predators 6-0 at Bridgestone Arena. Jackson Blake finished with a goal and two assists, Carolina’s power play struck three times in four chances, and Brandon Bussi stopped all 22 shots he faced.

A first period that tipped the night

Carolina did not need long to seize control. Blake opened the scoring at 5:02 of the first, beating Juuse Saros with a wrist shot after passes from Sebastian Aho and Shayne Gostisbehere. Just 2:02 later, Jordan Martinook made it 2-0, finishing another wrist shot off setup work from Nikolaj Ehlers and Jordan Staal.

That was already a sharp warning for Nashville, but the Hurricanes added another before the period was done. Ehlers scored unassisted at 13:29, and a manageable start had become a 3-0 hole before the game was 14 minutes old. Blake, Aho and Ehlers were all in the middle of that push, and Carolina never gave the scoreline back.

The Predators at least kept the game from running away in the second for most of the period, but they still could not pull a goal back. Logan Stankoven’s wrist shot at 16:37, created by Blake, pushed the lead to 4-0 and removed most of the remaining suspense. By then, Carolina had already shown the basic shape of the night: quick finishing, support scoring and very little waste when chances appeared.

Special teams and support play widened the margin

The most decisive statistical gap sat on special teams. Carolina went 3-for-4 on the power play, while Nashville finished 0-for-5. In a game with only a four-shot difference overall, that kind of special-teams split is enormous. The Hurricanes made their opportunities count; the Predators spent five power plays looking for traction and never found it.

Bussi’s shutout deserves equal billing. Nashville produced 22 shots, and none got through. Carolina also helped its goaltender with 15 blocked shots, more than double Nashville’s six. The Predators actually held a slight edge in the faceoff circle at 52.2 per cent, but that advantage never translated into offence that could change the game. Roman Josi led Nashville with four shots, while Filip Forsberg and Mavrik Bourque had three apiece, yet the breakthrough never came.

Carolina then finished the job in the third. Mark Jankowski scored at 9:21 with assists from Felix Unger Sorum and Taylor Hall, and Andrei Svechnikov closed the scoring at 19:05 after Aho and Blake combined on the play. That gave Blake a three-point night, Aho two assists, and Ehlers a goal and an assist in a result that kept producing contributors well beyond a single line.

Our take: the score was lopsided, but the reasons were clear

This was not a case of one team piling up a massive shot total and simply overwhelming the other with volume. Carolina outshot Nashville only 26-22. The blowout came from what the Hurricanes did with the chances they had, what they did on the power play, and how little they gave away around their own net. When a team scores six times on 26 shots, gets three power-play goals and protects a shutout, the formula does not need much interpretation.

If there is one caution inside the win for Carolina, it is puck management and discipline. The Hurricanes were charged with 24 giveaways and took five penalties for 10 minutes. Nashville failed to punish either issue, but better finishing on the other side could make those numbers matter in a hurry. The clean scoreboard should not hide that part of the performance.

For Nashville, the to-do list is more urgent. A power play with five chances produced nothing, and a night against a team charged with 24 giveaways resulted in only one takeaway. That is not enough pressure on loose pucks, and it leaves too many potential possessions unused. The Predators also needed more from their most dangerous names. Josi put four shots up, Forsberg had three, Steven Stamkos had two and Ryan O’Reilly one, but the group never found a way to bend the game back toward respectability.

What remains, then, is a simple reading of a harsh result. Carolina was sharper early, better on special teams and cleaner in the moments that decide NHL games. Nashville won some small categories, including faceoffs, but almost every meaningful swing belonged to the Hurricanes. That is how a six-goal road win gets built, and why the final score felt fully earned long before the last goal at 19:05 of the third.
