Sebastian Aho drives Hurricanes past Flyers with two goals and an overtime assist

Sebastian Aho struck 10 seconds into the game, tied it again in the third period and then helped set up Shayne Gostisbehere’s overtime winner as the Carolina Hurricanes edged the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 on Saturday at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

A frantic start, then a Philadelphia push

Carolina needed only 10 seconds to announce itself. Aho opened the scoring with a snap shot, with William Carrier and Andrei Svechnikov collecting the assists, and the Hurricanes had the kind of instant lead that usually lets their deeper shot volume dictate the night.

Philadelphia did not unravel after the early mistake. Owen Tippett pulled the game level at 8:03 of the first period on a snap shot set up by Trevor Zegras, and the Flyers stayed connected to the game with a far more direct formula: finish checks, block attempts and make every Carolina chance work harder than the raw shot totals would suggest. The Flyers finished with 29 hits and 17 blocked shots, numbers that help explain why a game tilted by shots still stayed tight into overtime.

The home side grabbed its only lead at 7:20 of the second period when Matvei Michkov beat Pyotr Kochetkov with a wrist shot off passes from Travis Konecny and Christian Dvorak. That goal gave Philadelphia a 2-1 edge despite generating relatively little overall volume. Through two periods, the Flyers had been efficient enough to turn 18 total shots on the night into a real chance at an upset.

Aho changes the result twice

The third period turned on Carolina’s top line talent, and Aho was at the centre of it again. At 4:59, he tied the game 2-2 with another snap shot, this time from Nikolaj Ehlers and Svechnikov. It was Aho’s second goal of the evening and Svechnikov’s second assist, a combination that gave Carolina its clearest finishing touch when it mattered most.

That equalizer also restored the shape of the game suggested by the broader numbers. Carolina finished with a 40-18 advantage in shots, won the faceoff battle by the slimmest of margins at 32-31 and forced Joseph Woll into 37 saves. Woll’s .925 save percentage was the main reason Philadelphia still had a point available late; without that goaltending, Carolina’s shot edge could have settled things much earlier.

Instead, the Flyers carried the tie into overtime before Carolina finally ended it at 2:51. Gostisbehere delivered the winner on a slap shot, with Jackson Blake and Aho providing the assists. That gave Aho a three-point night built around every major offensive moment Carolina needed: the opening goal, the tying goal and the final setup. Kochetkov, who faced only 18 shots, finished with 16 saves and did enough once the Hurricanes regained control.

Our take

This result makes the clearest case for Carolina in two numbers: 40 shots and a 2-for-4 power play. Even without attaching the man-advantage goals to specific scoring plays, that special-teams gap mattered because Philadelphia went 0-for-4 with its own chances. In a one-goal overtime game, that kind of separation is often the difference between chasing and finishing.

There is still something for the Hurricanes to clean up. Carolina was charged with 20 giveaways, a total high enough to keep a lower-shot opponent alive longer than the overall flow should allow. When a team generates 40 shots and still needs overtime, puck management is a fair place to look first. For Philadelphia, the path forward is just as visible: the Flyers matched Carolina closely on faceoffs, hit everything and got quality goaltending from Woll, but 18 shots and an empty power play left too little margin. They stayed in the contest through structure and work rate; they lost it because the offence never expanded enough to protect the lead Michkov had created.

That is what gives the final sequence its weight. The Flyers proved they could make Carolina uncomfortable for stretches, but the Hurricanes had the best scorer on the ice and eventually the better accumulation of chances. Aho’s night did not just decorate the scoresheet. It explained the game.
