Hurricanes break open scoreless game in second period and beat Flyers 4-1

The Carolina Hurricanes waited more than half the night for a breakthrough, then settled matters in a sharp second-period burst and finished off the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 on Sunday at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

Carolina found its opening and kept pressing

For 30 minutes, this matchup offered plenty of contact and not much separation. Philadelphia finished with 20 hits and 14 blocked shots, and Joseph Woll's work in net kept the game level even as Carolina built a modest edge in volume. The Hurricanes put 30 shots on target to the Flyers' 19, and once that pressure finally produced a goal, the evening changed quickly.

Andrei Svechnikov supplied the first turn at 10:16 of the second period, beating Woll with a snap shot off a setup from Sean Walker. Carolina did not let that lead sit. At 13:45, Shayne Gostisbehere doubled it with another snap shot, this time with Sebastian Aho and William Carrier collecting the assists.

That sequence mattered because it gave Carolina room to play from in front after a long, scoreless opening. The Hurricanes were not flawless with the puck — they were charged with 14 giveaways — but they kept coming often enough to make Philadelphia defend for extended stretches. Woll finished with 26 saves, a total that reflected both his workload and the pressure Carolina eventually converted.

Philadelphia answered once, but only briefly

The Flyers did push back in the same period. Christian Dvorak cut the deficit to 2-1 at 15:26, tipping in a puck from Nick Seeler and Denver Barkey. After more than half a game without a goal, Philadelphia suddenly had a route back into it.

That opening lasted only 1:28. Aho restored Carolina's two-goal cushion at 16:54, finishing a snap shot with assists from Carrier and Svechnikov. It was the key reply of the night: Philadelphia had finally broken through, and Carolina answered before the game could tilt into a one-goal third period.

Aho and Svechnikov each finished with a goal and an assist, and Carrier quietly supported the swing with two assists. Carolina's scoring depth showed up again later, but those contributions in the second period did the heaviest lifting. On the other side, Dvorak's goal stood as Philadelphia's lone finish despite decent support work from Seeler and Barkey.

Our take: the difference was finish, not special teams

The game's clearest dividing line was what each side did at five-on-five when the chances that mattered arrived. Neither club produced on the power play — Carolina went 0-for-4 and Philadelphia 0-for-3 — so this was not a special-teams decision. It was a game in which Carolina turned a scoreless setup into a three-goal second period, while Philadelphia managed one response and no sustained follow-up.

Mark Jankowski's goal at 15:09 of the third period put the result out of reach and gave Carolina its fourth scorer. Jordan Martinook earned the assist, another sign that the Hurricanes did not rely on one line alone to close the night. Pyotr Kochetkov handled the rest, stopping 18 of 19 shots for a .947 save percentage.

For Carolina, the encouraging detail is that the top names produced without the team needing a power-play breakthrough. Aho and Svechnikov were directly involved in the decisive stretch, and the Hurricanes also finished with a slight edge in the faceoff circle at 33 wins to 31. For Philadelphia, the path to a tighter game is easier to identify than to fix: fewer giveaways than the 18 recorded here, and more than 19 shots over 60 minutes. The Flyers competed physically and got enough saves early to stay in it, but the middle of the game belonged to Carolina, and the scoreboard ended up matching that stretch.
