Whitecaps surrender two leads in 3-3 draw with D.C. United at BC Place

The Vancouver Whitecaps had enough of the ball and enough of the goals to expect more than a draw Saturday, but defensive lapses around the six-yard box turned a promising night into a 3-3 result against D.C. United at BC Place. Thomas Müller supplied a goal and an assist for Vancouver, while Kimito Nono scored twice for the visitors.

A game that kept slipping back to level

D.C. United struck first in the 16th minute, and the warning sign was one that would matter all evening. Kimito Nono finished from very close range after Nathan Ordaz's assist following a corner, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead despite Vancouver controlling more of the ball.

The Whitecaps answered in the 25th when Brian White scored from very close range to make it 1-1. That response settled Vancouver, and the home side turned its possession into a halftime lead deep in first-half stoppage time. In the third minute of added time, Bruno Caicedo took Thomas Müller's pass and drove a right-footed finish from the left side of the box into the bottom-right corner.

That should have been a platform. Instead, the second half followed the same pattern as the first: Vancouver built, D.C. punished. Lucas Bartlett rose for a close-range header in the 65th minute after Keisuke Kurokawa's cross on another corner, wiping out the Whitecaps' lead at 2-2. Vancouver responded again in the 72nd, when Müller hit from outside the box after Aleksa Cvetković set him up. But the advantage lasted only eight minutes. Nono's second of the night, guided in from the right side of the six-yard box off Hosei Kijima's cross in the 80th, sealed the 3-3 scoreline.

Vancouver found goals in several ways

There was real attacking value in the Whitecaps' work. Vancouver finished with 63.4 per cent possession, completed 469 of 548 passes and put nine of 16 shots on target. Those are the numbers of a team that spent long stretches dictating play, and the scoring reflected variety rather than reliance on one source alone: White converted from close range, Caicedo finished from the left side of the area and Müller struck from distance.

Müller was central to almost everything Vancouver did well in the final third. He recorded a goal and an assist, matched White with five shots and put two efforts on target. White, meanwhile, put three of his five attempts on goal and added Vancouver's first equalizer. Caicedo was sharp with his chances, scoring on one of his two shots and placing both on target.

D.C., though, never stopped asking questions. The visitors produced 21 shots to Vancouver's 16 and won 10 corners despite having only 36.6 per cent of possession. Nono's two-goal night stood out, and Bartlett's equalizer underlined how dangerous D.C. remained around dead balls and wide service. Sean Johnson's six saves helped D.C. survive Vancouver's pressure, while Yohei Takaoka stopped four shots at the other end to keep the Whitecaps from leaving empty-handed.

Our take: control was there, closure was not

The Whitecaps did enough with the ball to win this match. Three goals at home, nine shots on target and more than 63 per cent possession will usually put a team in position to collect all three points. Vancouver also got contributions from several places, which matters in a game that demanded answers after every setback.

The bigger issue was where the defending broke down. D.C. scored its first and second goals from corners, then found the third from a cross into the six-yard area. All three finishes came from point-blank or near point-blank range. When a side allows that many close-range touches in scoring positions, possession alone stops being a shield. The practical lesson is straightforward: Vancouver has to cut down the repeat deliveries that led to 10 D.C. corners and defend the space in front of goal more cleanly once those balls arrive.

There is still a useful performance buried inside the frustration. White remained productive, Caicedo took his chance well, and Müller looked like the game's most influential Whitecaps attacker. But this draw felt like a reminder that territorial control and final score control are not the same thing. Until Vancouver matches its passing command with firmer defending on set plays and crosses, nights that look winnable can keep ending in shared points.
