Prescott-to-Lamb strike with 40 seconds left lifts Cowboys past Texans 34-30

The Dallas Cowboys spent most of Sunday chasing the Houston Texans, then finished the job in the final minute. Dak Prescott found CeeDee Lamb for a 12-yard touchdown with 40 seconds remaining, sealing a 34-30 comeback after Dallas had trailed by 10 at halftime and again in the third quarter.

Houston built the lead, but never the separation

Houston’s opening half was efficient on the scoreboard and clean in the kicking game. C.J. Stroud opened the scoring with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Nico Collins at 10:01 of the first quarter, and Ka'imi Fairbairn added field goals from 51, 39 and 54 yards to send the Texans into halftime with a 16-6 advantage.

Dallas stayed close through Brandon Aubrey field goals from 39 and 50 yards, but the first two quarters belonged to Houston’s finishing. Fairbairn was perfect on all three of his field-goal attempts, including the 54-yarder as time expired in the second quarter, and that final kick gave the Texans a two-score cushion despite a game that never turned sloppy. Neither side committed a turnover all afternoon.

That was the warning sign for Dallas: the Cowboys were moving the ball, just not cashing in often enough early. Prescott would finish 32 of 45 for 335 yards, while Lamb produced a huge workload with 17 catches for 189 yards on 21 targets. Dallas also got field-position help from KaVontae Turpin, who returned five kickoffs for 147 yards and added 47 yards on four punt returns. Even so, Houston had the scoreboard edge through two quarters.

Williams changed the game where Dallas needed it most

The comeback started quickly after the break. Javonte Williams scored on an 8-yard run at 12:55 of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 16-13, but Houston answered almost immediately when Stroud hit Collins again, this time for 22 yards at 10:50, restoring a 10-point lead at 23-13.

From there, Dallas turned repeated trips into touchdowns. Williams punched in a 1-yard run with 6:49 left in the third quarter, then added a 2-yard scoring run at 11:17 of the fourth to put the Cowboys ahead 27-23. He finished with 62 rushing yards on 19 carries, but his bigger contribution was blunt and decisive: three touchdowns, all from inside the 10-yard line. In a game with no defensive or special-teams scores and no takeaways, that red-zone certainty mattered. Dallas went 4-for-4 inside the red zone.

Houston still had a late answer. Woody Marks scored on a 6-yard run with 2:23 remaining, and the Texans were back in front 30-27. That sequence captured the shape of the game: Dallas owned more snaps and more sustained opportunities, but Houston kept finding enough explosive production through Stroud and Collins to force one more response.

Our take: Dallas won with volume, then delivered the final throw

The winning response came with almost no margin left. Prescott found Lamb for a 12-yard touchdown with 40 seconds remaining, and Aubrey’s extra point made it 34-30. It was the most fitting finish available, because no Dallas pairing influenced the game more strongly through the air. Prescott spread the ball around enough to keep the offence moving, but Lamb was the constant outlet and eventually the finisher.

The numbers explain why Dallas survived a game that could easily have slipped away. The Cowboys ran 73 plays to Houston’s 52, held the ball for 33:27 and committed no turnovers. Houston was actually more explosive on a per-play basis, averaging 7.6 yards to Dallas’s 5.5 and nearly matching the Cowboys in total yardage, 397 to 399. But efficiency is harder to cash when it comes with only 16 first downs, a 3-for-10 day on third down and 13 penalties for 90 yards.

For Dallas, the result is encouraging without being perfect. The running game averaged only 3.0 yards per carry, so this was not a day of steady ground control; it was a day of finishing at the goal line and trusting Prescott to throw often. Aubrey also went 2-for-4 on field goals, a flaw that kept the door open longer than Dallas would have liked.

For Houston, Stroud’s 347 passing yards and Collins’ two-touchdown afternoon were strong enough to beat plenty of opponents. The missing piece was not star power but margin management. The Texans did not turn the ball over, yet the penalties and the shortage of extended drives left too many points available for a Dallas offence that never wasted a red-zone trip. In a four-point game, that was the difference.
