Hyry’s 16-second opener and Becker’s late second-period finish lift Stars past Blues

The Dallas Stars did not need a flood of offense at Enterprise Center. They needed one jolt at the start, one answer after St. Louis pulled level, and enough composure everywhere else to leave with a 2-1 win over the Blues.

A game decided before it settled, then again just before the intermission

Dallas put its stamp on the night almost immediately. Arttu Hyry scored 16 seconds into the first period, a wrist shot created by Cameron Hughes and Jack Anderson, and that single burst changed the shape of the game. The Stars were able to play from in front from the opening shift, and in a 2-1 result that matters more than any broad claim about control ever could.

St. Louis worked its way back in the second. Aleksanteri Kaskimaki tied the game at 13:30 on a snap shot with Zach Dean drawing the assist, giving the Blues the reset they had spent much of the evening chasing. But the level score did not last to the break. Jack Becker restored the Dallas lead at 18:29 of the second, finishing unassisted for what stood as the winning goal.

That sequence is the whole story in miniature: early Dallas punch, midgame St. Louis reply, late Dallas answer. The third period then became an exercise in preservation. Neither side found another goal, and the Stars’ one-goal edge survived all the way to 0:00.

The margins were small, but Dallas handled them better

The team totals say this was close without being chaotic. Dallas finished with a 28-24 edge in shots and a slim 51.1 percent advantage on faceoffs, numbers that suggest neither club ran away from the game. What separated the Stars more clearly was the work after those faceoffs and shot attempts. Dallas blocked 17 shots to St. Louis’ 11 and committed fewer giveaways, 14 to 18. In a one-goal game, those are not decorative numbers; they are the difference between playing defense once and playing it twice.

Hyry was the most noticeable skater in the Dallas attack by the numbers. He scored the opener, put up six shots, and won 11 of 17 faceoffs for a 64.7 percent success rate. Becker’s night was a different kind of efficient: one shot, one goal, and it happened at the moment the game most needed a swing. Hughes and Anderson each added an assist on the first goal, making Dallas’ offense look less like a long stream and more like a set of timely interventions.

For St. Louis, Kaskimaki supplied the only finish that got through, and Dean’s assist gave the Blues their one clean scoring connection on the scoresheet. Justin Carbonneau’s four shots showed some persistence, while Pius Suter won 9 of 15 draws. The Blues also carried the heavier physical ledger with 29 hits to Dallas’ 18. But physical edge by itself did not tilt the score. St. Louis hit more, yet Dallas still had the better shot total and the extra goal.

Two nets, one result

Another unusual layer to the game was how both teams divided the crease. Dallas received 40 minutes from Remi Poirier, who stopped 11 of 12 shots, and 20 spotless minutes from Brandon Halverson, who turned aside all 12 shots he faced. Combined, that became 23 saves and a .958 team save percentage. However the minutes were arranged, the Stars got exactly the kind of goaltending a tight road win requires: one goal allowed, none after St. Louis tied the game.

The Blues also got strong work in goal. Georgi Romanov was credited with 10 saves on 10 shots, and Jordan Binnington stopped 16 of 18. That is the frustrating part for St. Louis: competent goaltending was there, but the skaters could not build enough offense around it. When a club allows only two goals and still loses, attention naturally shifts from the crease to the finishing and the puck management in front of it.

Our take: clean execution was the real separator

Our take: Dallas will like the discipline of the result more than the beauty of it. The Stars did not bury St. Louis on the power play, going 0 for 4, and they still had 14 giveaways, so this was hardly a flawless night. But they defended their lead with 17 blocked shots, won the faceoff battle by a hair, and got excellent combined goaltending. If there is an area to sharpen even after a win, it is turning extra man-advantages into something more punishing; four power plays without a goal kept the margin narrow all night.

Our take: St. Louis has a clearer to-do list. The Blues finished 0 for 3 on the power play, gave the puck away 18 times, and produced 24 shots despite delivering 29 hits. That combination suggests a team that worked hard but did not consistently turn that work into cleaner offensive possession. The hit total shows engagement. The scoreline shows engagement was not enough. Against a Dallas side that was only slightly better in the raw totals, a little more precision with the puck might have been the difference between chasing the game and changing it.
