A game that turned in the fourth
For most of the night, the Broncos were fighting their own limitations as much as the Chargers. Denver opened the scoring when J.K. Dobbins ran in from two yards out with 6:53 left in the first quarter, then had to settle into a slower, more uneven game. Los Angeles cut the margin to 7-3 on Cameron Dicker’s 42-yard field goal in the second, and Wil Lutz restored a seven-point edge with a 34-yarder before halftime.
The game swung sharply in the third quarter. Justin Herbert found Hayden Rucci for a seven-yard touchdown pass with 5:32 remaining in the period, pulling the Chargers level at 10-10. Less than five minutes later, Kimani Vidal broke free for a 42-yard touchdown run, and Los Angeles had its first lead at 17-10 after trailing since the opening quarter.
That set up Denver’s best stretch of the night. Bo Nix hit Courtland Sutton on a five-yard touchdown pass with 8:53 left in the fourth to tie the game. Lutz then put the Broncos ahead with field goals from 19 and 36 yards, the last one coming with 1:08 to play. Denver scored 13 points in the final quarter, while the Chargers were shut out after Vidal’s late-third-quarter burst.
Denver found just enough offence
The unusual part of the Broncos’ win is how little margin their offence created. Denver finished with 224 total yards, averaged 3.9 yards per play and converted only one of 12 third downs. On many nights, that combination is not enough. Here, the Broncos survived because they avoided a passing-game collapse, accepted the short gains that were available and kept coming away with points often enough.
Nix’s line was modest but tidy: 16 completions on 27 attempts for 123 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. Evan Engram supplied the biggest chunk of receiving production with four catches for 55 yards, including Denver’s longest reception at 34 yards. Sutton caught only two passes, but one of them was the tying touchdown that reset the finish. Dobbins carried 18 times for 68 yards and the game’s first score, giving Denver a workable balance even without explosive rushing numbers.
Lutz was central to the result. He scored 11 points, hitting three of four field-goal attempts and both extra points, and his two fourth-quarter kicks gave Denver the control it had lacked for most of the night. The Broncos also helped themselves with field position in smaller ways. Marvin Mims Jr. averaged 17.5 yards on two punt returns, and Denver earned six first downs by penalty, a useful source of offence in a game where clean drives were hard to build.
Our take
The Broncos’ cleanest path to this win came through defence, and that is exactly where they found it. Los Angeles outgained Denver 237-224 and ran for 155 yards, but the Chargers also turned the ball over three times and gave up five sacks. That trade-off decided the night. Brandon Jones intercepted Herbert, and Denver recovered two Chargers fumbles. Nik Bonitto led the rush with two sacks, while Ja'Quan McMillian, D.J. Jones and Zach Allen added one each.
For the Chargers, the frustration is easy to identify in the numbers. Vidal averaged 7.1 yards per carry and Herbert added 54 rushing yards of his own, so there was enough ground production to support the game. But the passing attack never expanded it. Herbert finished 14 of 24 for 121 yards, and the sacks pushed Los Angeles down to 82 net passing yards. Add in nine penalties for 93 yards and two failed fourth-down attempts, and the Chargers gave away too many possessions and too much field position to protect a seven-point lead.
Denver leaves with the more flattering result than performance. Winning while going 1-for-12 on third down is not a formula to trust for long, and two touchdowns in five red-zone trips shows there was room for sharper execution near the goal line. Still, there is value in a road division win built on resilience. The Broncos were the steadier team when the game tightened, and in a 23-17 finish that was more important than style.
