Red Wings’ 31-second second-period burst set the tone in 7-4 win over Penguins

Detroit did not control the shot totals Tuesday at PPG Paints Arena. It controlled the moments that swung the game, and that was enough to turn a tight contest into a 7-4 Red Wings win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

A tie before intermission, then a jolt after it

Pittsburgh struck first at 7:19 of the opening period when Nick Robertson scored on a wrist shot, with Ilya Solovyov and Kaedan Korczak drawing the assists. For much of the first, that looked like the only separation available. Detroit changed the tone late, though, and the timing mattered. Michael Brandsegg-Nygård tied it at 18:23 on a wrist shot set up by Nate Danielson and Ben Chiarot, wiping out Pittsburgh’s early edge just before the break.

That equalizer did more than tidy the scoreboard. It set up the game’s sharpest swing early in the second period, when Detroit landed twice in 31 seconds. Mason Appleton made it 2-1 at 4:26 on a backhand from Chiarot and Anton Johansson. Before Pittsburgh could settle, Axel Sandin-Pellikka followed at 4:57 with a slap shot, assisted by Viktor Arvidsson and Emmitt Finnie, and suddenly a level game had become a two-goal Detroit lead.

Pittsburgh answered well enough to keep the night within reach. Rickard Rakell cut the deficit to 3-2 at 12:22 of the second, finishing a play from Samuel Girard and Robertson. At that stage, the Penguins were still very much in it. What changed the final shape of the game was the third period, where Detroit outscored Pittsburgh 4-2 and turned a one-goal cushion into a three-goal result.

The numbers point one way, the finish line pointed another

This is the kind of scoreline that forces a second look at the stat sheet. Pittsburgh was credited with 26 shots to Detroit’s 14 and won 56.4 percent of the faceoffs. On raw volume, the Penguins had more to work with. Detroit, however, was clinical in the stretches that decided the outcome, and that efficiency mattered more than owning more draws or more shot attempts on paper.

The special-teams details sharpen that contrast. Pittsburgh went 0-for-4 on the power play and still allowed a shorthanded goal, the only special-teams strike recorded in the game. Detroit did not cash its lone power play either, finishing 0-for-1, but it did not need a big power-play night because it kept delivering at five-on-five and added damage while Pittsburgh was up a man. That is a difficult combination for any team to overcome, especially in a game where it already had to erase a second-period deficit.

Detroit also got useful production from several different places. Chiarot finished with two assists, helping create both the late first-period equalizer and Appleton’s go-ahead goal. Brandsegg-Nygård did not just score once; he was also credited with seven hits. Finnie added an assist and five hits, while Sandin-Pellikka’s goal from the back end gave Detroit an important second punch in that 31-second burst. On Pittsburgh’s side, Robertson’s goal and assist stood out, and Rakell’s second-period finish kept pressure on the game before the final frame got away.

Our take: Detroit won the windows that matter most

Our take: this was not a game Detroit dominated from whistle to whistle by the available totals. It was a game the Red Wings understood in the most practical way possible. They erased the first deficit before intermission, then used one brief burst in the second period to seize control. When a team scores at 18:23 of the first and then twice by 4:57 of the second, it compresses the opponent’s margin for error in a hurry. Pittsburgh never fully recovered from that sequence, even though it stayed close for long stretches on the scoreboard.

Our take: both clubs have obvious places to tighten up, and the evidence is right there in the team numbers. For Detroit, generating only 14 shots and winning 43.6 percent of faceoffs is not the sort of profile that usually supports a seven-goal night, so more puck possession would make results like this easier to repeat. For Pittsburgh, the issue starts with opportunities left unused. The Penguins had 26 shots, won the faceoff battle, and received four power plays, yet finished with no power-play goals and gave up a shorthanded one. When those advantages produce that little, a 7-4 loss stops looking strange and starts looking explained.
