Houston’s two clean moments
Houston did not spend the night piling up chances. It spent the night making a very small number of them count. Guilherme opened the scoring in the 38th minute with a right-footed free kick into the bottom right corner, and Mateusz Bogusz doubled the lead in the 51st by converting a penalty into the top left corner. That was the entire outline of Houston’s attack: seven total shots, only two on target, and both on-target efforts finished for goals.
The contrast between the scoreline and the flow of the numbers was striking. Houston had 42.6 percent of the ball, completed 370 of 427 passes, and did not force a single save from Roman Celentano because Cincinnati’s goalkeeper only had those two on-target shots to deal with, and both became goals. For a long stretch, that looked like enough. In a league where some matches are shaped by volume, this one briefly belonged to precision and set-piece leverage.
Cincinnati kept knocking until the door opened
FC Cincinnati’s side of the stat sheet tells the story of a team that kept returning to the attack. Cincinnati finished with 57.4 percent possession, 26 shots, eight on target, seven corners and 20 shot assists. Denkey was at the center of it, producing seven shots, putting three on target, assisting one goal and scoring the equalizer himself. Jonathan Bond’s six saves are not decoration here; they are a major reason Houston carried its lead as deep as it did.
The first crack came in the 73rd minute, when Bryan Ramírez finished from very close range into the bottom left corner off Denkey’s assist to make it 2-1. From there, the match no longer felt settled, only delayed. Cincinnati had already forced Houston into 35 clearances by the end of the night, and the equalizer finally arrived in the 90th minute plus seven when Denkey converted a penalty into the bottom right corner. A game that had threatened to become a lesson in Houston efficiency instead became a lesson in how relentless pressure can eventually rewrite the scoreboard.
Our take: the draw makes sense, but not in the same way for both clubs
Our take: Houston will look at the timing and feel the sting first. Any team that leads 2-0 and is still ahead into the closing stretch will believe it had the result in hand, and conceding the tying goal in 90'+7' is the kind of finish that lingers. But the broader numbers also say this was always a fragile lead. Houston managed only seven shots, just five shot assists and no further on-target cushion beyond the two goals. Cincinnati, meanwhile, kept the ball more, passed more, shot far more often and made Bond work throughout.
If Houston is searching for improvement, the clearest avenue is not a dramatic tactical reinvention but simply finding more relief with the ball. The evidence is plain enough: 42.6 percent possession, 35 clearances and no saves required from Celentano. That combination suggests long stretches spent ending Cincinnati attacks rather than extending Houston’s own. A two-goal head start built from a free kick and a penalty can be valuable; living on only those moments is much harder over 90 minutes plus stoppage time.
Cincinnati’s lesson is the reverse. The visitors had access to this match almost all night. The 26 shots, eight on-target attempts, seven corners and 20 shot assists show that clearly. Yet they still needed a goal from very close range in the 73rd minute and a stoppage-time penalty just to draw level. That does not erase the merit of the comeback, and Denkey in particular delivered a big all-around attacking line. It does, however, underline that territorial edge is not the same thing as scoreboard comfort. In the end, 2-2 feels fair on the run of play, even if neither side will enjoy the route it took to get there.
