Indiana’s offense announced itself early
The first quarter set the tone without fully settling the game. Mitchell opened with a three-point play at 9:23, Clark hit from 25 feet at 8:41, and Indiana kept nudging the margin back out whenever Toronto threatened. The Tempo got within 8-7 on Kiki Rice’s layup at 7:34 and stayed close behind Isabelle Harrison’s work, but Clark’s three at 7:23 and a steady stream of half-court finishes helped the Fever walk out of the period up 25-19. That six-point edge was modest. The larger clue was how often Indiana looked comfortable getting to its spots.
The second quarter widened the argument, then complicated it. Lexie Hull’s three at 8:31 pushed Indiana to 30-21, and Mitchell’s three at 7:56 made it 33-23. That could have become the separating stretch, but Toronto refused to let the game flatten. Temi Fagbenle and Rice attacked the score back into range, Laura Juskaite hit from deep at 4:42, Julie Allemand drilled a 28-footer at 1:49, and Rice’s 27-foot three with 48.5 seconds left brought the Tempo within five. When Harrison made two free throws with 24.7 seconds remaining, Indiana’s once-comfortable cushion had become a 53-50 halftime lead.
What kept the Fever in front was precision. Indiana shot 59 percent from the field and 51.7 percent from three for the night, numbers that do not happen by accident when they are paired with 26 assists on 36 made baskets. What kept Toronto alive was volume in other places: 12 offensive rebounds and 30 free-throw attempts. Even before the third quarter turned wild, the shape of the game was clear. Indiana had the cleaner offense; Toronto had to manufacture extra chances to stay close.
The third quarter became a contest of answers
Toronto’s best stretch came right after the break. Harrison made two free throws at 9:03, then tied it 55-55 with a three at 8:36. Juskaite gave the Tempo their brief 57-55 lead at 8:14, and the rest of the quarter became a rope-pull. Mitchell answered with a three at 7:57. Fagbenle put Toronto ahead again at 7:13. Rice kept the pressure on, first tying it at 63-63 with 5:50 left, then completing a three-point play for 66-66 at 4:15, then scoring again at 3:47 for a 68-66 edge. Fagbenle’s layup at 2:55 made it 70-69. Toronto never built breathing room, but for a while it turned Indiana’s control into a genuine argument.
That was when Indiana’s star power became decisive rather than decorative. Mitchell’s third-quarter threes at 6:55 and 3:27 were the obvious blows, but the sequence that truly changed the temperature came from the supporting cast. Aliyah Boston hit a 27-foot three at 5:34. Myisha Hines-Allen scored on a floater at 2:28, then hit a 27-foot three at 1:55. After Fagbenle brought Toronto back within 74-73 at 1:27, Tyasha Harris answered with a 28-foot three at 1:06, and Hines-Allen scored again with 4.9 seconds left. Instead of heading to the fourth tied or trailing, Indiana carried a 79-73 lead into the final period.
Our take: this was the revealing part of the night. Toronto showed enough scoring balance to create eight lead changes overall, but Indiana had more ways to answer. Mitchell finished with 33 points on 12-of-17 shooting and 7-of-11 from three. Clark added 28 points and 14 assists. When a team combines that kind of shot-making with only 11 turnovers, the offense is doing more than running hot for a few possessions.
Mitchell closed it, and the box score explains why
The fourth quarter never produced Toronto’s last big push because Indiana cut it off almost immediately. Clark opened the period with two free throws at 9:25, and though Juskaite and Fagbenle helped the Tempo trim the gap to 83-78 by 7:13, the Fever answered with force rather than caution. Boston scored inside at 6:09. Clark hit two free throws at 5:23 and added a layup at 5:01 for an 89-78 lead. Toronto got back to 89-82 on Juskaite’s layup with 4:07 remaining, but that was the last truly manageable number. Clark made two more free throws at 3:55, Mitchell buried a step-back jumper at 3:22, and after Juskaite’s three cut it to 95-85 with 2:28 left, Mitchell responded 14 seconds later with a three of her own. She followed with a layup and free throw at 1:42, and Hines-Allen supplied the final points in a 24-12 closing quarter.
The headliners were obvious, but Indiana’s depth mattered because it kept the offense from becoming a two-player recital. Boston scored only eight points, yet she made both of her three-point attempts and added three steals and two blocks. Hines-Allen posted nine points and seven rebounds in 18 minutes and had some of the game’s most important late-third-quarter buckets. Harris gave Indiana seven points and three assists in 13 minutes. For Toronto, Juskaite’s 22 points, Rice’s 18 points and five assists, Harrison’s 16 points and nine rebounds, and Fagbenle’s 16 points were enough to keep pressure on the scoreboard, just not enough to overcome the difference in efficiency.
Our take: Toronto can look at this game and reasonably believe the fight was real, because the Tempo won the rebounding battle 34-30 and generated 12 offensive boards. But the corrections are plain. Leaving 11 points at the free-throw line in a game that was 53-50 at halftime and 79-73 after three is too costly, and allowing 15 Indiana threes on 29 attempts is even harder to survive. Indiana, even in a 103-point performance, has details to clean up too: the Fever were outrebounded, allowed 38 points in the paint, and got six turnovers from Clark alone. Still, those are notes around the margins of an excellent offensive display. The defining truth of this result is simpler: the Fever had the best scorers, the sharper passing night, and the final answer every time Toronto threatened to turn the evening into something tighter.
