Rodgers and Jaylen Warren supply the finishing punch in Steelers’ 34-22 win over Colts

Aaron Rodgers delivered three touchdown passes, Jaylen Warren broke the game open twice, and Pittsburgh made its red-zone chances count Sunday in a 34-22 win over Indianapolis at Acrisure Stadium.

Big answers, then a steadier edge

Indianapolis opened the scoring on Spencer Shrader’s 57-yard field goal with 8:57 left in the first quarter, but the lead barely existed before Pittsburgh erased it. On the next scoring play, Rodgers found Warren for an 80-yard touchdown at 8:45, turning a 3-0 deficit into a 7-3 Steelers advantage in a swing of 12 seconds on the game clock.

That exchange set the shape of the afternoon. The Colts kept producing points through Shrader, who added a 56-yarder later in the first quarter and eventually went a perfect 5-for-5 on field goals, but Pittsburgh answered with touchdowns often enough to keep control. Rodgers connected with Pat Freiermuth from 1 yard out early in the second quarter, and although Tyler Warren’s 1-yard rushing touchdown cut the margin to 14-13, Chris Boswell’s 48-yard field goal in the final minute of the half sent the Steelers to the break up 17-13.

It was not a game built on takeaways or short fields. Neither team committed a turnover. Instead, Pittsburgh gained separation by getting more from fewer snaps. The Steelers ran 54 plays to Indianapolis’s 69 and still finished with more total yards, 352 to 332, a cleaner summary of which offence found the bigger moments.

Jaylen Warren’s second strike changed the terms

The Colts kept nudging the game back within reach, and for a while it looked as though their patience might drag Pittsburgh into a one-possession finish. Shrader’s 22-yard field goal made it 17-16 midway through the third quarter. Pittsburgh’s response was immediate and decisive: Warren broke loose for a 50-yard touchdown run at 7:06, restoring an eight-point lead at 24-16.

That score mattered because of how Indianapolis spent the rest of the day. Daniel Jones piled up 24 completions and 267 passing yards, and Tyler Warren led the Colts with seven catches for 83 yards, but Indianapolis never found the end zone through the air. The only Colts touchdown came on the goal-line run by Tyler Warren, leaving Shrader to supply 16 of the team’s 22 points.

Even after Shrader’s fourth and fifth field goals trimmed the score first to 24-19 and then to 24-22, Pittsburgh still had the most reliable finishing sequence left. Rodgers hit Freiermuth for a 17-yard touchdown with 6:35 remaining, their second scoring connection of the day, and Boswell’s 54-yard field goal with 3:43 left turned a tense two-point game into a 12-point margin.

Our take: efficiency, not volume, won this one

Pittsburgh’s advantage was not about monopolizing the ball or grinding out more first downs. The Colts actually held the ball for 32 minutes and posted 19 first downs to Pittsburgh’s 16. The difference was efficiency. The Steelers averaged 6.5 yards per play to the Colts’ 4.8, averaged 5.8 yards per rush, and converted both of their red-zone trips into touchdowns. When Rodgers had a chance to finish drives, he did.

Warren was the clearest embodiment of that difference. He crossed 100 yards on the ground with 101 on 15 carries, added six catches for 87 yards, and accounted for two touchdowns on explosive plays of 80 and 50 yards. Freiermuth supplied the finishing work in tighter spaces with touchdown catches of 1 and 17 yards. That combination gave Pittsburgh both its home-run threat and its red-zone answer.

For Indianapolis, the frustration is easy to identify even without stretching beyond the numbers. The Colts protected the ball and moved it often enough to stay attached, but 66 rushing yards on 24 attempts put too much of the game on Jones, and a 1-for-3 mark in the red zone left points behind. Jones did enough to keep possessions alive, and targets such as Tyler Warren, Josh Downs and Keenan Allen gave the passing game useful stretches, yet those drives too often ended with Shrader walking on instead of the offence finishing them.

There were still useful signs for the Colts. Shrader was excellent from distance, drilling field goals from 57 and 56 yards, and the defence limited Pittsburgh to 10 drives overall. But against a team that never turned the ball over, Indianapolis needed either more push in the run game or more touchdown production through the air. Pittsburgh, by contrast, offered a simple winning formula: protect the ball, strike vertically, and make red-zone chances count.
