Carlo Holse’s 21-minute hat trick sends St. Louis CITY SC past LA Galaxy 6-2

St. Louis CITY SC settled this one almost before LA Galaxy could catch their breath, scoring twice in the opening seven minutes and riding Carlo Holse’s first-half hat trick to a 6-2 victory Sunday at Energizer Park.

Holse ended the suspense in 21 minutes

The match turned into a St. Louis avalanche almost immediately. Holse opened the scoring in the second minute with a left-footed finish from the centre of the box after Rafael Navarro set him up, then struck again five minutes later from the left side of the area, again with Navarro supplying the assist and this time threading the through ball.

By the 21st minute, St. Louis had a third. Chris Durkin sent Holse through, and the midfielder completed his hat trick with another left-footed finish, this one into the bottom-right corner from the centre of the box. Three goals in 19 minutes would have been punishing enough; three from the same player inside 21 minutes made the game’s defining story unmistakable.

LA Galaxy did produce a response before the break. Robert Taylor pulled one back in the 31st minute with a right-footed strike from outside the box into the top-right corner, assisted by Erik Thommy. For a moment, that gave the visitors a route back at 3-1. St. Louis closed it just as quickly.

Late first-half surge buried LA Galaxy

The home side restored complete control at the end of the half. Navarro converted a 45th-minute penalty with a right-footed shot into the bottom-left corner for 4-1, then St. Louis struck again deep into stoppage time when Lukas MacNaughton headed in from the centre of the box after Alexandru Matan’s cross following a set-piece situation.

That sequence mattered as much as the early burst. Instead of reaching halftime with a two-goal deficit and some encouragement, LA Galaxy went in trailing by four after conceding twice in the closing stages of the half. The scoreboard read 5-1 by the interval, and the match was effectively decided.

St. Louis removed any remaining doubt eight minutes into the second half. Durkin collected his second assist of the night when he found Navarro, who finished from the left side of the box into the bottom-right corner for the hosts’ sixth goal in the 53rd minute.

LA Galaxy managed one more goal in the 71st minute. João Klauss scored with a header from the centre of the box into the top-left corner, assisted by Marco Reus, to make it 6-2. It changed the margin, but not the shape of the night.

Our take: finishing, not volume, made this a rout

The raw shot totals tell an interesting story. LA Galaxy actually attempted more shots, 19 to 11, and put seven on target to St. Louis’ six. But St. Louis converted every shot on goal, while LA finished with only two goals despite forcing five saves from Roman Bürki. That is the cleanest statistical explanation for why a game with competitive volume turned into a four-goal defeat.

Holse and Navarro were the obvious drivers. Holse scored three times from four shots, all three on target, and Navarro paired two goals with two assists. Durkin added two assists of his own, giving St. Louis four direct goal contributions from its central creators before the match was an hour old. When a side gets that kind of return from a few key attackers, defending becomes an exercise in damage control.

There were also signs of broader control from the home team. St. Louis held 59.4 per cent of possession and completed 542 of 605 passes, numbers that fit a team able to reset the tempo after scoring early. LA Galaxy were not shot-shy and did find moments, but conceding six goals on six shots on target left no room for their attacking work to matter much.

For St. Louis, the lesson is encouraging rather than complicated: when the final pass arrives this cleanly, the attack can look ruthless even without high shot volume. For LA Galaxy, the improvement point is just as clear. Nineteen shots and two goals can keep a team competitive on many nights; allowing six from six on-target efforts almost never will. Sunday’s result was shaped less by how often each team attacked than by what happened when the attacks reached the box.
