Sergi Solans finishes twice as Real Salt Lake turns efficiency into 3-0 win over New England

Real Salt Lake spent much of Saturday night without the ball, but not without control of the scoreline. An early strike from Aiden Hezarkhani and a second-half brace from Sergi Solans gave RSL a 3-0 MLS win over the New England Revolution at America First Field despite long stretches of New England possession.

An early blow changed the rhythm

The match turned almost immediately. Hezarkhani scored in the second minute, taking a left-footed shot from a difficult angle on the right and driving it into the top-left corner for a 1-0 lead. That gave Real Salt Lake the kind of start that allowed the home side to play from ahead for virtually the entire night.

From there, New England had plenty of the ball and a healthy share of the attacking volume. The Revolution finished with 66.6 per cent possession, 16 shots and 11 corners, numbers that usually give a team a real chance to dictate a result. Instead, the early deficit became a stubborn problem. Real Salt Lake did not need many attacks to stay dangerous, and that contrast defined the evening.

Solans supplied the finishing touch

The second goal arrived in the 62nd minute and felt decisive because of how direct it was. Noel Caliskan found Solans with a through ball, and the RSL forward finished with his right foot from the centre of the box to make it 2-0. After absorbing so much of New England's possession, Real Salt Lake produced a clean attacking moment that widened the margin without needing a long spell of pressure.

Solans removed any lingering doubt in the 80th. Morgan Guilavogui set him up, and Solans scored from very close range with his left foot into the bottom-right corner. That gave him two goals on the night and confirmed him as the most important attacking figure in the match. He finished with five shots and put four on target, a sharp return in a game where Real Salt Lake created less often but punished mistakes far more ruthlessly.

That efficiency showed up across the team. Real Salt Lake attempted only nine shots but forced six on target and scored three times. New England, by comparison, managed four shots on target from 16 attempts. When one side is that much cleaner with its finishing, the possession split starts to matter less than the scoreline suggests.

RSL's defending held while New England's pressure drifted wide

The other major reason the score stayed lopsided was Real Salt Lake's defensive work. Rafael made four saves to preserve the clean sheet, and the numbers around him point to a team that spent long stretches protecting its penalty area. RSL recorded 34 clearances, nine interceptions and three blocked shots. Those are the statistics of a side that accepted pressure and survived it.

New England moved the ball well enough to post 535 accurate passes and a 90 per cent completion rate, but the Revolution never turned that circulation into enough precision at the end of attacks. They sent in 31 crosses and earned 11 corners, yet the scoreboard never changed for them. Volume was not the problem; end product was.

That is where the match will sting for New England. A team can live with conceding possession if it creates the clearer moments, and RSL did exactly that. The Revolution had territory, passes and set-piece opportunities, but too many attacks ended without the final touch required to test the scoreline.

Our take: a convincing result, with useful warnings for both clubs

For Real Salt Lake, this was the kind of win that reflects maturity as much as flair. The finishing was excellent, the defending was committed and the game management was good enough to protect an early lead and then extend it twice. Solans gave the attack a cutting edge, Hezarkhani's opener changed the whole night, and the supporting passes from Caliskan and Guilavogui were as valuable as any long spell of possession.

The caution for RSL is that a match played this deep can become dangerous if the finishing cools off. With only 33.4 per cent of the ball and 34 clearances, the home side asked a lot of its back line and goalkeeper. On another night, a team generating 11 corners and 16 shots may punish that pressure more effectively. The result was emphatic; the process still leaves room for a little more control.

For New England, the lesson is harsher because the raw material was there. The Revolution had the ball, produced 12 shot assists and forced RSL into repeated defending, but they left with no goals and a three-goal defeat. That points to two areas to clean up: sharper finishing in the final action and stronger resistance when opponents do break through. Allowing three goals on six shots on target faced is simply too expensive in a match where possession leaned so heavily the other way.

In the end, this was not a complicated story. Real Salt Lake was the more efficient side in both boxes, and that usually decides league matches. New England controlled a great deal of the evening without controlling the score. RSL understood the difference and won comfortably because of it.
