Garand posts 23-save shutout as Durzi’s opener lifts Rangers past Red Wings

An early lead and a flawless night in net were enough for New York. Sean Durzi scored 5:12 into the first period, Dylan Garand stopped all 23 Detroit shots, and the Rangers closed out a 2-0 win at Little Caesars Arena when Eeli Tolvanen scored at 18:44 of the third.

Durzi’s first-period strike changed the shape of the night

The Rangers did not need many openings because they used the first important one. Durzi’s slap shot at 5:12 of the opening period, set up by Gabe Perreault and Will Cuylle, gave New York the only goal it would need. In a game that finished with just 44 total shots and long stretches where neither side found a second breakthrough, scoring first mattered enormously.

Detroit still kept the contest on narrow terms. John Gibson stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced and never allowed the score to get away from his club. The Red Wings also finished with a small edge in shot volume, 23-21, and a stronger night in the faceoff circle at 56.3 per cent. That combination usually gives a team a chance to chase a one-goal deficit into the third period, and Detroit managed exactly that.

Where New York separated itself was in the details around the scoreline. The Rangers went 1-for-4 on the power play, while Detroit went 0-for-2. New York also blocked 12 shots and matched enough of the game’s physical side to prevent the Red Wings from turning their slight advantages in hits and draws into a scoring return. A 2-0 result can look simple on paper; this one was built on protecting a one-goal edge for a very long time.

Garand finished what the Rangers started

The cleanest difference between the teams was in goal. Garand’s 23-save shutout gave New York the steady performance every road team wants after an early breakthrough. Detroit put pucks on net from enough places to stay alive, but nothing changed the scoreboard. Garand’s stat line was absolute: 23 shots against, 23 saves, no second chance in the form that mattered most.

Detroit was not short on individual efforts. Marco Kasper led the Red Wings with four shots, while Michael Brandsegg-Nygard and Axel Sandin-Pellikka had three apiece. Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider added two shots each, and Andrew Copp helped drive puck possession on draws by winning 11 faceoffs. Those numbers show Detroit had contributors, but not the finisher who could solve Garand once and force the game into a different final stretch.

Tolvanen eventually supplied the insurance at 18:44 of the third, scoring on a wrist shot from Tye Kartye and Adam Fox. It was the only other puck to cross a goal line all night, and it rewarded another strong all-around contribution from Fox, who logged 22:50 in ice time and added an assist. Seider led Detroit skaters at 24:57, a sign of how heavily the Red Wings leaned on their top defender while trying to keep the margin within reach.

Our take

For the Rangers, this was the kind of win that coaches accept gladly and still use for correction. The scoreboard, special teams and shutout all point to a mature performance, but the Rangers also lost the faceoff battle and were charged with 11 giveaways. They took four penalties for 11 minutes as well, including a costly seven-minute total on Durzi’s ledger. Against a team with a sharper power play, those loose edges can turn a controlled night into a much more difficult one.

Detroit’s path forward is just as clear. The Red Wings were not blown out of the run of play by the available numbers; they actually led in shots, hits and faceoff percentage. But they also went scoreless on 23 shots, finished 0-for-2 on the power play and committed 15 penalty minutes, which handed New York four man-advantage chances. The structure of the game gave Detroit an opening deep into the third. What it did not give the Red Wings was enough finish to erase Durzi’s early goal, and that was the difference between a competitive outing and a frustrating one.
