Sharks answer Vegas rally with two third-period goals in 4-2 win

San Jose let a two-goal lead disappear early in the third period, then responded with the sharper finish. Mason Marchment broke the tie at 9:47 and Michael Misa added insurance at 14:54 as the Sharks beat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2 on Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena.

A thin margin, then a late first strike

For long stretches, the stat sheet suggested a Vegas push. The Golden Knights finished with 29 shots to San Jose’s 16, delivered more hits and spent more total time pressing for offence. But the Sharks owned the last minute of the opening period, and that changed the shape of the night.

Dmitry Orlov opened the scoring at 19:20 of the first, beating Carter Hart with a wrist shot after set-up work from Macklin Celebrini and Alexander Wennberg. That goal gave San Jose a 1-0 lead despite a quieter offensive period overall, and it forced Vegas to chase rather than settle into a scoreless game.

San Jose doubled the advantage at 6:45 of the second. Celebrini finished with a wrist shot, with Will Smith and Marchment collecting the assists. At 2-0, the Sharks had converted limited looks into a meaningful edge, and their young core was all over the sequence: Celebrini scored one and helped create another, while Smith added another assist to a tidy playmaking line.

Vegas fought back, but San Jose found the cleaner answers

The Golden Knights got one back late in the second when Tomas Hertl scored on a backhand at 17:24, assisted by Shea Theodore and Hart. That cut the deficit to 2-1 and gave Vegas a route back into the game heading to the third.

Vegas completed the comeback quickly. Nic Dowd tied it 2-2 at 3:18 of the third period, finishing a play started by Brett Howden and Ivan Barbashev. After spending much of the night generating the heavier shot volume, the Golden Knights had finally pulled level.

The level score did not last. Marchment restored San Jose’s lead at 9:47 of the third, with Darnell Nurse recording the assist. Then Misa made it a two-goal game again at 14:54, taking feeds from Igor Chernyshov and Tyler Toffoli for the 4-2 final. Those were the decisive minutes: Vegas worked back from 2-0 down, but San Jose produced the next two finishes and never gave the equalizer another opening on the scoreboard.

Askarov and the Sharks’ shot suppression carried the night

The clearest difference in the game sat in goal and in front of it. Yaroslav Askarov stopped 27 of 29 shots for a .931 save percentage, while Hart finished with 12 saves on 16 shots for .750. When one team scores four times on 16 shots and the other gets only two from 29, the goaltending line becomes impossible to ignore.

San Jose also made life harder on Vegas with 19 blocked shots, nearly double the Golden Knights’ 10. Nolan Allan and Nurse led that work with five blocks apiece, and Michael Kesselring logged a team-high 22:24 in ice time. That does not erase the pressure Vegas created, but it helps explain why the Golden Knights’ larger shot total did not turn into a winning night.

The Sharks were slightly better in the faceoff circle as well, winning 53.2 per cent of draws. Celebrini won seven of 12 faceoffs, while Wennberg went five for nine. Those are not headline numbers on their own, but in a game that swung on a handful of possessions and a few finishing sequences, small puck-control edges mattered.

Our take: Vegas generated more, San Jose executed better

Our take: this was the kind of result that flatters San Jose’s composure and leaves Vegas with a familiar frustration. The Golden Knights produced more shots, more hits and five power-play opportunities, yet the Sharks were more precise with their offence and more resilient around their own net. San Jose did not need volume because its best players made their touches count.

For the Sharks, the encouraging part is where the offence came from. Celebrini had a goal and an assist. Marchment had a goal and an assist. Orlov scored from the blue line. Misa supplied the insurance marker. That spread matters, especially in a game where San Jose did not spend all night in attack but still found enough finish to win convincingly.

For Vegas, the route to improvement is visible in the numbers. A team that puts 29 shots on goal and gets to five power plays should expect more than two goals, even with Hertl and Dowd supplying the comeback. The Golden Knights also could not protect the 2-2 score for long enough to turn their surge into standings value. San Jose’s answer arrived just 6:29 after the equalizer, and that quick reply was the game’s real separator. The Sharks bent, recovered and then closed with authority.
