Alexandru Matan’s two assists steer St. Louis CITY SC past Toronto FC 3-1

St. Louis CITY SC did not need a frantic finish to settle this one. It built the result with possession, volume and a pair of incisive passes from Alexandru Matan, then watched Toronto FC finally break through in stoppage time of a 3-1 MLS home win.

Matan’s passing turned control into a lead

For 40 minutes, the game lived in the space between pressure and payoff. St. Louis had more of the ball and more of the attacking volume, but the breakthrough only arrived in the 41st minute, when Matan supplied the cleanest pass of the night. His through ball released Carlo Holse, who finished with his left foot from the centre of the box to make it 1-0.

That goal mattered beyond the scoreline because it gave shape to what St. Louis had been building. The home side finished with 60.9 percent possession, 18 shots and 15 shot assists, numbers that suggest a team repeatedly getting into useful attacking positions rather than living off one or two moments. Toronto, by contrast, spent much of the night trying to interrupt those sequences, and did well to hang in through stretches of pressure.

The second-half goals arrived before Toronto could reset

If the opener rewarded patience, the second goal punished hesitation. At 54 minutes, Matan struck again as creator, setting up Tomas Totland for a right-footed finish from the centre of the box into the bottom-left corner. St. Louis had its cushion, and Toronto was suddenly chasing a match in which it had already seen less of the ball and produced fewer clean looks on target.

The third goal at 68 minutes felt like the evening’s summary in miniature: another St. Louis move finished from central range, this time by substitute Simon Becher, with Conrad Wallem providing the assist. That made it 3-0 and put the emphasis on the patterns that carried the game. St. Louis placed eight shots on target, won eight corners and completed 399 passes. Toronto answered with 10 shots and just two on target, numbers that left little margin for a comeback until very late.

There is credit due on the Toronto side for the work that kept the score from becoming heavier. Luka Gavran made five saves, while Toronto posted 17 effective tackles, 18 interceptions and 18 clearances. Those are the numbers of a team doing a great deal of defensive repair. The problem is that constant repair rarely leaves enough room to build something going the other way, and Toronto’s 39.1 percent possession reflected that tension all night.

A late reminder from Toronto, and a useful warning for St. Louis

Toronto’s lone reward came at 90'+7, when Theo Corbeanu headed in from very close range after Alonso Coello’s delivery in a set-piece situation. It did not change the result, but it did keep the ending from becoming entirely comfortable for St. Louis. Roman Bürki was credited with one save, meaning Toronto’s limited accuracy still produced a late blemish on a match the home side otherwise controlled.

That finish also highlighted Toronto’s clearest attacking route of the night. Open play was hard to sustain when the club completed 231 passes to St. Louis’ 399 and managed only two accurate crosses from 13 attempts. The late set-piece goal was evidence that Toronto could still threaten when it delivered into the right area. Our take: if there is an obvious improvement to chase from this match, it is not some abstract call for more effort but a more reliable way to turn possession spells and wide service into shots on target. The numbers here were too thin for long stretches.

Our take on St. Louis is warmer, but not without a note of caution. The home side earned this result through repeatable production: two assists from Matan, goals from Holse, Totland and Becher, and a team line full of pressure indicators from corners to shot assists. That is a strong recipe. The caution is simple and grounded in what happened at the end: a team that allowed only two shots on target still conceded from a stoppage-time set piece. In a 3-1 win, that is a footnote. In a tighter match, it could be the story.

Overall, this looked like the kind of result that makes sense when the stat sheet and the scoring log are read together. St. Louis had more of the ball, created more attempts and converted three separate assisted moves before Toronto found a late reply. Toronto’s consolation should not erase the larger picture, but it does offer one useful lesson: even on a night spent absorbing pressure, one well-delivered dead ball can still say something about where the next improvement might come from.
