Ryan Tverberg’s tiebreaker lifts Maple Leafs past Senators after a back-and-forth third

The Toronto Maple Leafs did not bury the Ottawa Senators under shot volume Wednesday. They won 4-2 because the game’s biggest moments kept breaking their way, especially in a third period that turned from tense to decisive in a matter of minutes at Canadian Tire Centre.

The tie never had time to settle

Scoreless first periods can sometimes feel like scene-setting, and that was the case here. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators reached intermission without a goal, then spent the rest of the night trading answers until Toronto finally produced the separation Ottawa could not match.

Henrik Rybinski opened the scoring at 3:51 of the second, beating Ottawa with a snap shot after setup work from Vinni Lettieri and Nick Blankenburg. Ottawa answered quickly. Dylan Cozens pulled the Senators level at 6:18 with an unassisted wrist shot, and the 1-1 score carried the game into a third period that delivered nearly all of the evening’s swing.

The sharpest stretch came in the middle of the third. Steven Lorentz put Toronto ahead 2-1 at 10:01 with a tip-in off feeds from Marshall Rifai and Brandon Duhaime. Ottawa erased that edge just 41 seconds later when Hoyt Stanley scored at 10:42, taking assists from Tomas Hamara and Claude Giroux. That sequence made the game feel newly open, but the next break belonged to Toronto. Ryan Tverberg struck at 15:43 on a snap shot created by Jacob Quillan and Blake Smith, restoring the Maple Leafs’ lead at 3-2. Toronto later added the goal that set the official 4-2 final.

That timeline explains the result better than the shot totals do. Toronto finished with 23 shots to Ottawa’s 20, hardly a runaway, but the Maple Leafs were the club that kept reclaiming control after the game tilted back toward even terms. In a close NHL game, that is often the difference between a solid road win and a wasted night of near-misses.

Penalties, special teams and small margins

If there was one area where Ottawa made the night harder on itself, it was discipline. The Senators took nine penalties for 30 minutes, while Toronto took six for 24. That gave the Maple Leafs five power-play chances to Ottawa’s two, and Toronto converted once. Ottawa went 0-for-2. In a game decided by two goals, and tied deep into the third, that gap matters even if the power-play scoring was not overwhelming.

Ottawa did some things well enough to suggest this could have gone differently. The Senators outhit Toronto 27-11 and won 55 percent of the faceoffs. Cozens won two-thirds of his draws, and Giroux was strong there as well. Stanley not only scored but also blocked four shots. Yet those edges never became enough sustained offense. Ottawa managed 20 shots, just three takeaways, and 13 giveaways. That is a difficult mix when the opponent is not exactly drowning you in chances.

Toronto was hardly flawless. The Maple Leafs lost the faceoff battle, gave the puck away 10 times and spent too much time in the penalty box themselves. But their mistakes did not grow into the same kind of drag on the scoreboard. Anthony Stolarz finished with 18 saves and a .900 save percentage, steady enough behind a team that did not own every metric. Up front, Toronto’s scoring came from multiple places rather than one dominant line, and that breadth helped carry the night.

Our take: Toronto had the sharper finish, but both teams left obvious corrections

Our take: this was a useful example of how close games are often decided less by overall force than by cleaner execution in a handful of moments. Toronto did not dominate the Senators physically, and it did not control the dots. What it did do was answer pressure with another goal, then find the tiebreaker when the game was 2-2 in the third. Rybinski, Lorentz and Tverberg supplied the named goals in the scoring log, and six different assists underline the same point: Toronto got contributions from throughout the lineup.

For Ottawa, the immediate improvement is not mysterious. A team that wins the faceoff count and lands 27 hits should give itself more than 20 shots and more than two power-play opportunities of value. The Senators also cannot ignore the 30 penalty minutes. When you hand Toronto five power plays and then fail to score on your own two chances, you are asking to be perfect at even strength. Ottawa was not far off the pace, but it kept giving away too many of the margins it worked to earn elsewhere.

Toronto’s corrections are just as clear, even in victory. The Maple Leafs can play a cleaner game with the puck than 10 giveaways suggest, and a 45 percent faceoff rate is not a number to celebrate. The penalty total should also bother them more than the result probably does. Still, the larger reaction is favorable. In a game that remained live until the closing minutes, Toronto found the decisive goal, protected the edge and turned a choppy, competitive contest into a 4-2 win. For one night, that was enough — and more importantly, it was earned in the moments that mattered most.
