Flames’ 3:58 second-period burst sends Canucks to 3-1 loss in Calgary

For 35 minutes at the Saddledome, Vancouver and Calgary played a game that looked stubborn, narrow and entirely undecided. Then the Flames scored three times in 3:58 late in the second period, and that surge did all the separating in a 3-1 Calgary win.

A quiet night until Calgary found five loud minutes

The opening period offered no scoring and little separation on the scoreboard, which made the second-period finish feel even sharper. Calgary finally cracked the deadlock at 15:00 of the second when Joel Farabee scored on a wrist shot, with Matvei Gridin and Zayne Parekh collecting the assists. In a game that had resisted a first mistake, that goal changed the rhythm immediately.

The Flames did not stop at one. Matt Coronato made it 2-0 at 17:30, set up by Morgan Frost and Gridin, and Samuel Honzek followed at 18:58 from Parekh and Farabee. That is the part of the night Vancouver will not enjoy revisiting: a scoreless game became a three-goal deficit before the period even expired. Calgary’s top contributors were spread across that burst, but the common thread was simple enough — once the Flames got the lead, they kept adding before the Canucks could reset.

Vancouver did answer in the third, but only once. Arshdeep Bains scored at 6:22, with Braeden Cootes recording the assist, to trim the deficit to 3-1. It gave the Canucks a route back into the game, but the larger numbers told the harder truth. Calgary finished with 30 shots to Vancouver’s 9, and Dustin Wolf only needed eight saves. At the other end, Kevin Lankinen’s 27 saves kept the game from getting away by more.

The game lived on the shot ledger

There is a version of this result that flatters Vancouver for its resistance, and some of that is fair. The Canucks blocked 23 shots and delivered 30 hits, numbers that suggest a team spending long stretches defending but still working. Victor Mancini led the way with five blocks, while Guillaume Brisebois and Kirill Kudryavtsev added three apiece. Ilya Safonov’s six hits stood out too. Lankinen’s .900 save percentage gave Vancouver a chance to survive the pressure for a long time.

But resistance is not the same thing as pressure, and that distinction defined the night. Vancouver’s 14 giveaways were nearly triple Calgary’s 5, and the Canucks never built enough offense to balance the workload at their own end. Calgary, meanwhile, got scoring from Coronato, Farabee and Honzek, plus two-assist nights from Gridin and Parekh. Even though the Flames lost the faceoff battle, they still turned the game into a 30-9 shot advantage, which is the stat line that hangs over everything else.

Special teams added another layer to Calgary’s edge. The Flames finished 1-for-4 on the power play, while Vancouver went 0-for-3. In a game where the Canucks generated only nine shots overall, those missed opportunities mattered more, not less. Calgary did not need a flood of offense after its second-period burst; it only needed to avoid giving Vancouver a power-play lifeline, and the Canucks never found one.

Our take: The Canucks earned grit, but not enough puck

Vancouver can point to a few honest positives. The Canucks won 53.4 percent of the faceoffs, logged 23 blocks, and played with enough bite to keep the score close outside that late second-period collapse. Aatu Raty’s 15-for-20 night on draws was one of several small wins. But when a team wins more faceoffs and still produces only nine shots, the follow-up to possession becomes the issue. Add in 14 giveaways and an 0-for-3 power play, and the offensive picture looks thin no matter how much effort showed up in the defensive numbers.

If there is a practical correction to make, it starts with turning those puck-winning moments into cleaner sequences. The faceoff edge says Vancouver did get its hands on the puck. The shot total says it rarely kept it long enough or moved it well enough to trouble Calgary. That does not require a grand diagnosis to see. It simply means the next step has to be better puck security than 14 giveaways and more from three power plays than no goals.

Calgary’s takeaway is more comfortable, but not perfect. The Flames should like the spread of contributions and the discipline of their finish once Farabee broke the game open. They also won despite losing the draw count, which speaks to how well the rest of their night functioned. If there is something to tidy, it is giving Vancouver three power-play chances and conceding the faceoff edge. On this night those issues did not cost Calgary because the Canucks generated so little. Against a more productive shooting team, they might. On Tuesday, though, the defining image was clear enough: one long quiet game, and one explosive four-minute stretch that belonged entirely to the Flames.
