Kartye and Cuylle score twice as Rangers answer every Canucks push in 6-2 win

The Vancouver Canucks twice erased a one-goal deficit at Madison Square Garden, but every recovery was met by a quick New York response. Tye Kartye and Will Cuylle scored two goals apiece, and the Rangers turned a competitive game through 40 minutes into a 6-2 win with two more strikes in the opening 5:57 of the third.

Every Vancouver answer came with a New York reply

New York needed only 27 seconds to seize control of the night. Kartye opened the scoring with a snap shot off assists from J.T. Miller and Alexis Lafrenière, forcing Vancouver to play from behind almost immediately. The Canucks did settle after that first punch, and Jake DeBrusk pulled them level at 17:04 of the opening period when he finished a setup from Jonathan Lekkerimäki.

That equalizer could have been the platform for a cleaner middle stretch, but the Rangers reclaimed the lead early in the second. Cuylle scored at 2:09 on a wrist shot set up by Noah Laba, restoring New York's edge at 2-1. Vancouver stayed within reach and found another answer late in the period when Pettersson tied the game at 16:56, with Brendan Gallagher and Drew O'Connor drawing the assists.

The problem for Vancouver was that the game never stayed level for long. The 2-2 score lasted just 1:29 before Kartye struck again at 18:25, this time on a wrist shot from Miller and Vladislav Gavrikov. That goal did more than give the Rangers a 3-2 lead heading to intermission; it preserved the pattern of the night, with New York refusing to let either Canucks comeback breathe.

A tight game through 40 minutes broke open in six third-period minutes

If Vancouver still had a path back, the opening of the third period shut it down quickly. Lafrenière made it 4-2 at 1:04, finishing a play started by Gabe Perreault and Mika Zibanejad. Less than five minutes later, Perreault added one of his own at 5:57 on a tip-in, with Adam Fox and Zibanejad assisting. A one-goal game had become a three-goal deficit before the period was six minutes old.

Cuylle's second goal at 15:22 completed the scoring and underlined how much secondary finishing New York found across the lineup. Kartye and Cuylle each scored twice, Lafrenière added a goal and an assist, Perreault had a goal and an assist, and both Miller and Zibanejad supplied two assists. The Rangers did not need one player to carry the offence; they got layers of production at the exact moments that decided the game.

The numbers show this was not a shot avalanche. New York finished with 25 shots to Vancouver's 21, a modest edge rather than a lopsided one. The difference was conversion and timing. Dylan Garand stopped 19 of 21 shots for the Rangers, while Kevin Lankinen stopped 19 of 25 for the Canucks. New York also won the special-teams battle with a power-play goal on two chances, while Vancouver went 0-for-1 on the power play and still had to rely on a shorthanded goal to keep the game close for a while.

Our take

This result will frustrate Vancouver because the Canucks did enough to keep dragging themselves back into the contest, but not enough to change its direction. They erased the Rangers' lead at 1-1 and again at 2-2, yet each reset was brief. The late second-period tie was gone in 89 seconds, and the third period effectively got away from them on goals at 1:04 and 5:57.

There were a few measurable areas behind that slide. The Rangers controlled the faceoff circle, winning 31 draws to Vancouver's 19, and that gap mattered over the course of a game that otherwise stayed fairly close in shot volume. Vancouver did bring a physical edge with 33 hits to New York's 22, but the cleaner statistical advantages belonged to the home side: better faceoff numbers, the only power-play goal, and the stronger save percentage.

For the Canucks, the path to a better night is not hard to identify even if the score ran away late. More work in the circle would help, and a game with only 46 total shots leaves little room for six goals against. Just as important, a team that generated 21 shots and only one power-play opportunity had almost no margin once it fell behind for the third time. The 6-2 final looks heavy, but it was built on sharp New York responses and a third period Vancouver could not steady.
