White, Müller and Diaby give Vancouver Whitecaps three different answers in 3-0 win over Real Salt Lake

The Vancouver Whitecaps did not lean on just one route to goal at America First Field. Brian White opened the scoring from very close range in the ninth minute, Thomas Müller doubled the lead in the 29th from the centre of the box, and Yadaly Diaby finished the job in the 63rd with a strike from outside the box as Vancouver beat Real Salt Lake 3-0 in MLS play.

An early finish, then a firmer grip

The most important sequence of the night was also the simplest: Vancouver took the lead quickly and never gave it back. White’s close-range finish in the ninth minute gave the Whitecaps the kind of start that changes the tone of a road match, and the second goal arrived before halftime could reset anything. When Müller finished from the middle of the box in the 29th, Vancouver had turned a good opening into control.

That control showed up in the broader numbers as well. The Whitecaps finished with 52.8 percent possession, 21 shots and seven corners, all slight but meaningful advantages over Real Salt Lake’s 47.2 percent possession, 12 shots and six corners. This was not a game won by sitting on one early moment. Vancouver kept producing attacks, with 14 shot assists to Real Salt Lake’s nine, and made sure the first goal did not stand alone as the night’s only breakthrough.

The third goal mattered because it came from a different place entirely. White had scored from almost on top of goal, Müller from central scoring territory, and Diaby closed the game with a left-footed effort from outside the box in the 63rd minute. Conceding from very close range, from the centre of the area and from distance is a rough summary of the night for Real Salt Lake: Vancouver found more than one way through.

Diaby and Müller gave the attack its range

Diaby was at the centre of the Whitecaps’ most dangerous work. He set up Müller’s goal in the first half, then supplied one of his own after the break, finishing with a team-high five shots, two on target, one assist and one goal. Those are the numbers of a player who kept showing up in decisive places, even without needing every attempt to be clean.

Müller’s line was quieter but just as sharp. He put both of his shots on target and converted one, which is the kind of efficiency that makes a two-goal lead feel deserved rather than accidental. White was even more economical: one shot, one on target, one goal. If Vancouver’s 21 total shots suggested volume, their scorers supplied the calmer detail underneath it. The Whitecaps did not need a flood of perfect chances to separate the game; they needed their best moments to count, and they did.

There was also enough defensive work behind the goals to protect the result. Yohei Takaoka kept the clean sheet with three saves, while Vancouver blocked six Real Salt Lake shots. Real Salt Lake still managed 12 attempts, so this was not an evening without resistance, but too few of those looks truly troubled the scoreboard. Three shots on target from 12 total attempts left the home side chasing precision it never found.

Our take: a strong road result, with useful warnings for both sides

Our take: this was one of Vancouver’s more complete scorelines because the match combined finishing, control and enough defensive order to make the clean sheet stand up. The Whitecaps can still polish parts of it. A team that produced 21 shots also managed only six on target, and a side that crossed 21 times completed five of them. On another night, that ratio could make the margin smaller. The other number worth watching is discipline: Vancouver committed 14 fouls and took five yellow cards. A 3-0 road win does not need extra chaos added to it.

For Real Salt Lake, the clearest area to sharpen is the last action. The home side recorded 387 accurate passes and six corners, so the ball was not absent from useful areas, but the end product stalled at three shots on target, no assists and no goals. Their crossing numbers tell a similar story: three accurate crosses from 12 attempts. That does not mean every attack should be forced wide or that one fix solves everything, but it does suggest this match was lost as much in execution as in territory. Against a Vancouver team that was cleaner in front of goal, that gap was the whole game.
