Hart and Vegas outlast Sharks 2-1 as third-period replies give way to shootout finish

For 40 minutes at SAP Center, this game looked like it might never crack. Then the San Jose Sharks finally found a power-play opener, the Vegas Golden Knights answered four minutes later, and a careful, low-margin night ended with Braeden Bowman deciding a 2-1 shootout win.

A scoreless night finally stirred in the third

The first 40 minutes belonged to the goaltenders and to patience. San Jose finished the night with the heavier shot total, 29-23, and the bigger hit count, 30-24, but neither side put a puck behind the starter through two periods. The Sharks also stayed out of the box entirely, which meant Vegas never saw a power play and had to hunt its offense at even strength all evening.

San Jose finally bent the game at 4:18 of the third period, when Michael Misa scored on a wrist shot with Ivar Stenberg and Dmitry Orlov collecting the assists. That was the Sharks’ one payoff on three power-play opportunities, and for a few minutes it looked like it might be enough in a night this tight.

It did not take Vegas long to reset everything. At 8:22 of the third, Alexander Holtz answered with a wrist shot off feeds from Tanner Laczynski and Adam Ginning, tying the game 1-1. With no further scoring in regulation or overtime, the entire evening shrank to a handful of finishing moments after 65 minutes of restraint.

The thin edges that pushed Vegas through

In games like this, the difference is rarely one overwhelming category. It is usually a collection of small ones, and Vegas owned several. Carter Hart stopped 28 of 29 shots for a .966 save percentage, just a shade better than Yaroslav Askarov’s 22 saves on 23 shots for San Jose. The Golden Knights also won 55.4 percent of the faceoffs and blocked 16 shots, numbers that matter when neither team can create much separation. Laczynski won 12 of 19 draws, and Matyas Sapovaliv went 13 for 23, helping Vegas start enough sequences with the puck even though San Jose carried the higher shot count.

The shootout supplied the only real burst of finishing. Sapovaliv scored on a backhand for Vegas, Stenberg answered with a wrist shot for San Jose, and Bowman delivered the final conversion with another wrist shot. In a game where so much had been denied, Vegas found one extra touch at the very end and that was the whole margin.

Our take: San Jose had more volume, Vegas had the cleaner details

Our take: this was a resourceful win for Vegas, not a polished one. The Golden Knights gave the puck away 20 times, generated only 23 shots, and managed just one goal before the shootout. That is not a profile to chase over many nights. But they compensated with faceoff control, enough shot blocking from the back end, and a goaltending performance from Hart that kept the game from tilting after San Jose’s third-period opener. When a team wins with that formula, it deserves credit for surviving the parts it did not control well.

For San Jose, the frustration is easy to locate because the opportunities are right there in the numbers. The Sharks had more shots, more hits, three power plays, and perfect discipline with zero penalties taken. They also got a goal from Misa and a primary hand in both the regulation scoring and the shootout from Stenberg. Yet they still produced only one goal across regulation and overtime, and the faceoff deficit gave too many small possessions back to Vegas. In a 1-1 game, those lost draws and missed chances to build on the power-play breakthrough loom larger than any single sequence.

That is why this result feels less like a dramatic swing and more like a lesson in narrow margins. San Jose did enough to make the game hard. Vegas did enough to make the game survivable. Then the Golden Knights were better in the last few touches available. Misa opened the scoring, Holtz canceled it, Hart carried the calm, and Bowman supplied the last word. On a night short on space and goals, that was all Vegas needed.
