Oilers erase early Jets lead and roll 5-2 behind Bouchard’s four-assist night

Winnipeg landed the first goal, but Edmonton owned the answer. The Oilers turned a 1-0 deficit into a 5-2 NHL win at Rogers Place by stacking four straight goals and getting a huge playmaking night from Evan Bouchard.

The reply started fast and kept going

The Jets made the sharper opening statement when Parker Ford scored 1:58 into the first period, with Isaak Phillips and Brayden Yager drawing the assists. For a moment, that looked like the sort of early strike that can tilt a night. Edmonton’s response wiped out that idea quickly. Ryan Shea tied it at 6:52, set up by Leon Draisaitl and Bouchard, and Connor McDavid put the Oilers ahead at 9:31 off feeds from Spencer Stastney and Ty Emberson.

What followed was the game’s decisive stretch. Edmonton carried its lead into the second period and then widened it in a hurry: Draisaitl scored at 12:08 from McDavid and Bouchard, and Alex Formenton added another just 1:43 later, finishing a play created by Bouchard and Shea. That sequence turned a manageable one-goal game into a 4-1 Oilers cushion, and it did so without needing special teams to do the work.

Winnipeg did not disappear entirely. Jacob Julien’s goal at 15:53 of the third period, assisted by Lucas Wahlin and Colby Barlow, cut the deficit to 4-2 and at least reopened the arithmetic. Edmonton answered before that could become a real squeeze. Colton Dach scored at 18:53, with Shea and Bouchard again in the build-up, restoring the three-goal margin and sealing a result that had been leaning Edmonton’s way since the opening period.

Blue-line fingerprints everywhere

The most striking detail in the Oilers’ score sheet was how much of it ran through the defense. Bouchard finished with four assists, Shea scored once and added two more helpers, and Emberson and Stastney each chipped in an assist. That means Edmonton defensemen supplied eight of the club’s 10 assists, an enormous share of the offensive wiring for one night.

The bigger names still mattered, of course. McDavid and Draisaitl each posted a goal and an assist, and they also helped Edmonton start with the puck often enough to keep pressure moving in the right direction. Edmonton won 55.6 percent of the faceoffs, with McDavid going 7-for-9 and Draisaitl 4-for-5. Add in a 28-21 edge in shots, a 28-11 advantage in hits, and an 8-2 edge in takeaways, and the Oilers gave themselves more chances to push the game along rather than chase it.

For Winnipeg, there were still pieces worth noticing. Ford opened the scoring, Julien found a late goal, and the Jets blocked 19 shots, with Henry Thrun recording five blocks on his own. Yager and Julien were both above 50 percent on draws. But the night kept circling back to the same problem: too many loose pucks handed away. Winnipeg was charged with 23 giveaways, compared with Edmonton’s 13, and a team that managed 21 shots overall never found much room for error with that kind of difference in puck care.

Our take: the middle stretch said the most

Our take: this was a more rounded Edmonton win than the score alone suggests, even if it was not flawless. The Oilers did not get anything from the power play, going 0-for-1, so this was not a night carried by one familiar mechanism. It came instead from the speed of the response after Winnipeg’s early goal, the faceoff work of McDavid and Draisaitl, and the unusual degree to which the blue line drove offense. If there is a nit to pick after scoring five, it is that 13 giveaways still leave room for cleaner management of the puck.

Our take on Winnipeg is a little harsher, because the clearest fix is sitting right in the team totals. The Jets went 0-for-2 on the power play and finished with 23 giveaways while forcing only two takeaways. That combination makes a comeback path much narrower, especially against an Edmonton team getting four assists from Bouchard and a three-point night from Shea. Winnipeg did enough blocking shots to stay involved and enough late in the third to make the score respectable, but the extra Edmonton possessions were too expensive over the course of the game.
