Perfetti answers nine seconds after tie, lifts Jets past Penguins 3-2

Cole Perfetti settled a frantic third period almost as soon as Pittsburgh had erased Winnipeg’s lead, scoring nine seconds after Declan Carlile tied the game to send the Jets to a 3-2 win at PPG Paints Arena.

A slow burn turned into a four-minute swing

The first 40 minutes offered little hint of the finish to come. Neither side scored in the opening period, and Pittsburgh finally broke through at 9:27 of the second when Ben Kindel redirected home a tip-in from Declan Carlile and Erik Karlsson.

That left the Penguins 20 minutes from closing out a tight game, but Winnipeg found its offence quickly in the third. Alex Iafallo tied it at 4:43 on an unassisted wrist shot, then Adam Lowry gave the Jets their first lead at 7:08, finishing a backhand after Iafallo and Dylan DeMelo combined on the setup.

Pittsburgh did answer. Carlile tied the game again at 8:53 with a wrist shot off feeds from Kindel and Ville Koivunen. But the reset barely lasted: Perfetti restored Winnipeg’s lead at 9:02, taking Josh Morrissey’s lone assist on the play and supplying what became the winner.

Support scoring carried the result

Winnipeg’s decisive push came from contributors beyond the headline names. Iafallo finished with a goal and an assist, Lowry added a goal and five hits, and Perfetti’s four-shot night ended with the game’s defining finish. Morrissey and DeMelo each chipped in an assist from the back end, while the Jets kept firing even without a point from Kyle Connor despite his six shots.

Pittsburgh received strong nights from two younger contributors in a losing effort. Kindel had a goal and an assist, Carlile matched him with a goal and an assist from the blue line, and Karlsson added another helper. Sidney Crosby drove plenty of the Penguins’ puck touches at the dot, winning 14 of 20 faceoffs and putting up five shots, while Sergei Murashov stopped 31 of 34 shots to give Pittsburgh a chance to protect its lead.

Our take: Winnipeg made the crucial moments count

This game was not decided by a lopsided stat line. Winnipeg finished with a narrow 34-31 edge in shots, Pittsburgh held the advantage on faceoffs at 54 per cent, and neither power play made a mark. The difference was the Jets’ finishing in a short, ruthless window: three third-period goals in 4:19, with the final answer arriving only nine seconds after the Penguins had pulled level.

That sequence will be the hardest part for Pittsburgh to digest. In a one-goal game where every tally came at even strength, the Penguins did enough to stay in touch and briefly recover. Giving the lead right back before the game could settle again undid much of that work in one shift.

For Winnipeg, the win came with a useful reminder that the details still matter. The Jets were outdrawn and charged with 20 giveaways, so the margin for error stayed thin until the end. For Pittsburgh, the path to a better result is visible in the numbers as well: the Penguins won more faceoffs and had two power-play chances, but they produced only two goals and neither came with the extra skater. On a night this tight, that was just not enough.
