The Story
The Vancouver Canucks dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to the Florida Panthers on Oct. 15, 2026, after failing to hold their first-period advantage.
Florida controlled possession through all three periods, but the Canucks produced enough in expected-goals terms to make the game closer than the shot-and-territory picture suggested. The Panthers posted a 75.00 CF% in the first period and also led overall scoring chances and high-danger chances, including a 22-15 edge in scoring chances and a 13-7 advantage in high-danger chances.
Vancouver’s expected-goals share improved notably in the second period and carried into the third. The Canucks managed a 53.34 xGF% after generating a 6-4 chance advantage at even strength and a 3-1 edge in high-danger chances in that stretch, finishing the game with a 47.93 xGF% overall.
Individually, Max Sasson paced Vancouver in CF% with 55.00 while logging 9:40 of time on ice, and the Canucks also saw Tom Willander lead their expected-goals production in the game. Willander finished with 1.05 xGF and a team-best 75.65 xGF%, and he was on the ice for a 7-3 lead in scoring chances and a 4-2 advantage in high-danger chances.
At the other end, Leevi Meriläinen was credited with keeping Vancouver close as Florida’s expected goals mounted. Meriläinen faced a total of 4.25 xGF, stopped 36 of 39 shots, and finished with a 1.25 GSAx, though two of Florida’s three goals against were recorded as low-danger shots and the remaining goal came from a middle-danger attempt.
The overtime winner was Brady Tkachuk, scoring at 2:23. Vancouver’s road schedule continued immediately after the loss, with the Canucks set to close out their trip the following day in Tampa Bay against the Lightning.
