Britannia: Monsters, Machines & Mischief! runs at Britannia Mine Museum on Oct. 17 to 18 and Oct. 24 to 25.
The Story
Britannia Mine Museum will host a Halloween-themed exhibit called Britannia: Monsters, Machines & Mischief!, running on October 17 and 18 and again on October 24 and 25.
The museum says the exhibit will bring a spooky makeover to both its outside and indoor classic exhibits, including the Machine Shop, where six historic and modern machines will receive dedicated festive characters matched to their roles.
Families can take part in several add-ons during the event, including a Monster Machine colouring station for kids, a Monster Scavenger Hunt, and the Exploding Pumpkins live-science demonstration featuring Magnetic Slime.
The museum also plans a few times a day for visitors to watch its “mad scientists” ignite a “self-carving” pumpkin using calcium carbide and water, described as the same compound used to produce white flames in mining lamps and other equipment; the museum says a safety screen will be in place.
For visitors looking for a different experience underground, the museum’s classic underground train ride will operate with festive elements in the Big Machines, Monster Fun Underground Tour. The tour is described as including interactive activities such as “slime,” glow-in-the-dark colours, themed lighting, and an “escaped” monster causing mischief, with children prompted to help solve problems by figuring out what is causing mining machines to “malfunction.”
The museum says other classic attractions will continue during the Halloween events, including the BOOM! special effects show inside Mill No. 3 and gold-panning, while outdoor vehicles including the giant Westing House Airbrake Company (WABCO) haul truck and the CAT 793C mining truck will be decorated for the season.
All attractions are covered by general admission, and visitors can book a time slot between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. for the BOOM! show and underground tours on the museum’s website.
